Chris Hinnant Presentation to ASME Plant Engineering and Maintenance Technical Chapter
March 12, 2009
3:00 PM Central Daylight Time (UTC/GMT -5 hours) through 5:00 PM Central Daylight Time

Fatigue failures are an all too common occurrence in operating facilities. In many cases these failures could be avoided by applying a few simple requirements. The presentation will outline approaches utilized in fatigue design of piping and pressure vessels and how they can be used to protect against fatigue failures. Practical rules of thumb that will aid engineers in performing, reviewing, or specifying fatigue analyses will be provided. Additionally, recommendations for post fatigue failure activities will also be given. A review of ASME Section VIII, Division 2 fatigue rules will be included. Comparisons of ASME, British, and European fatigue Codes will be covered to provide an illustration of the variation in fatigue design lives for common components. A brief comparison of ASME fatigue rules and fatigue test data will also be provided to show the practical implications of fatigue design rules.
